History of Surveying and Geo-Informatics

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka commenced full academic works in 2001/2002 session with five Departments. The Department of Surveying and Geo-informatics is one of the five Departments in the faculty. Since then the department has successfully graduated 18 batches of students. The last batch graduated in 2022/2023 session. Surveying and Geo-informatics is a multidisciplinary subject, which serves as the foundation discipline in engineering, environmental planning and management, and land administration, Urban Planning and development of physical infrastructures, etc. The undergraduate programme of study for the award of B.Sc degree in Surveying and Geo-informatics was developed as a five year programme involving theory and detail practice. The programme covered all the subject areas in Surveying and Geo-informatics, such as Topographic, Engineering and Cad astral Surveying, Photographer, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information systems, Geodesy and Geodesy and Geo dynamics, Hydro graphic Surveying and Cartography. Surveying and Geo-informatics techniques have witnesses tremendous modernization and development due t0 advanced in computer space and information technologies. As these modern digital methods of data acquisition, processing and presentation continue to evolve and improve, there is need to constantly revise the undergraduate programme in Surveying and Geo-informatics, to incorporate these new changes.

This current edition of our undergraduate programme has been thoroughly revised and updated to accommodate modern developments and new techniques in the profession. This is to ensure that our students are well prepared both in the theory and practice of classical surveying techniques and Geo-information acquisition, processing and presentation.
