Fine and Applied Arts Philosophy & Objectives

DEPT OF FINIE AND APPLIED AERTS

Philosophy
Although academic training in the Visual Arts was originally conceived to enable individuals to develop their artistic skills with regard to “accurate expression” in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and related fields, it has since evolved into an enterprise for stimulating creativity through the manipulation of forms and materials. The interrelationship between art (as a creative expression) and cultural growth in the humanities, science and technology has made it increasingly obvious in recent times that art training should not be confined to the production of pure aesthetic objects alone. If its full potential as a cultural catalyst is to be realized, art should be taught not only to produce painters, sculptors, potters, printmakers, illustrators, textile designers and graphic artists but also to influence developments in Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Design, Industrial, Design, Resource Management and Modern Technology in general. No Art form would be valid and authentic if it does not reflect and advance the hopes and aspirations of the society of which it is a part.

2. Objectives
It is desirable that the curriculum aspire to produce competent artists with the right intellectual perspective on the role of art as an instrument of social development. The curriculum endeavors to achieve the following objectives:
(a) To stimulate and nurture artistic creativity in all its ramifications.

(b) To encourage and guide the students to use their creative skills to enhance and add breadth to the quality of living in the Nigerian environment.

(c) To maintain a good balance between practical and theoretical courses. This is to produce artists who would be both visually and culturally literate.

(d) To constitute a programme of study that will enable the student to combine the international dimensions of Art with a deep knowledge of local artistic and cultural traditions. Emphasizing development of high professional skills, motifs, and the cultivation of a personal idiom of expression.

(e) To raise the level of aesthetic and cultural awareness in the students and by extension, among the people through research, academic publications and art exhibitions.
