Philosophy & Objectives of Building

PHILOSOPHY

The underlying principle of the postgraduate programmes in the Department of Building is to provide theoretical and practical courses in specialized area of construction activities which will offer exciting opportunities for development of staff and students, as well as provide opportunity for those already in practice who are facing new challenges of the construction environment. The emphasis will be on the current methodology and global best practices, guided by perceived local industry needs. The programme outline and structure shall be subject to periodic revision in order to satisfy the dynamics of needs of the construction industry, building education and the general requirements of the postgraduate school of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

 

OBJECTIVES

These include among others to enable us

  1. Produce professionally trained high level managers, meeting the needs of construction industry, government establishments and institutions of higher learning;
  2. Conduct research into all aspect of the construction processes including productivity relationship of man-machine, processing and handling of materials, selection and utilization of construction equipment, applications of planning and scheduling techniques, and development of managerial information systems, quality control in construction products and techniques for project cost control and monitoring;
  3. Acquire sufficient and relevant academic and technical knowledge and skill for dealing with the problems of construction processes and Procedures;
  4. Learn to work as a team to achieve solution to multidisciplinary problem of the industry as quality of construction product is a shared commitment;
  5. Develop the skills and knowledge necessary to manage scarce construction resources, enhancing the experiences of practicing managers and professionals by upgrading their knowledge of modern management theories and techniques, and keeping abreast of the current trends in the global construction field; and
  6. To produce graduates with the skills in managing a construction company or Department, organizing, direct its marketing, financing, estimating, personal procurement, quality control and accounting functions.
